Utter Ukedom

Just random scenes and situations I come up with. Whether they are self-insertions is beside the point.

"Yval, I don't know how to tell you this but I don't think this is going to work out between us." Alessa sighed as she reclined in her armchair, fingers resting on the bridge of her pert nose.

"What do you mean?" The aged man blinked through his glasses.

"I mean you just don't seem interested in moving on. I mean you say you are, but your actions indicate otherwise." Her lips twist into a frown.

Yval remained speechless, it was true that he was careful in his words and the way he acted around her. He didn't want to give her the wrong impression but he also couldn't afford to become too close to her. It had nothing to do with their difference in age, she was as mature as he was if not more. It was simply because her voice reminded him too much of Laria. His wife.

Alessa spoke with the same amount of passion as she did, laughed with the same sort of schoolgirl giggles, and scolded with the same tone of disappointment and disapproval. He had spoken about her just once and Alessa fixated on it. Every time they met Alessa would attempt to coax information out of him. He was cautious, that much was certain, though it made him feel guilty for making things more difficult for Alessa than he wished.

And things would always be difficult for a woman in Alessa's position.

"I see how it is," Alessa's lips twisted into a frown, "Maybe you shouldn't see me anymore."

"What? No!" Yval gasped, rising to his feet. "I can't do that! I need you."

"Well tough, either you work out your issues about Laria or this will be the last time I let you in here." Her arms folded across her chest in finality.

"Why can't you understand that I'm simply not comfortable talking about Laria right now?"

"Because if I don't force you now you'll find a way to rationalize not talking about her is the best option. I can't even understand why you find it so hard when Laria's been dead for almost half a decade."

Yval found his hands balling into fists, "Five years may seem like a long time to some but to me it's-"

A sharp, ear-piercing ring screeches in the room.

"Oh time's up, but I do believe we're making progress. You've actually managed to say her name without breaking down and sobbing." Alessa beamed as she rose from her armchair.

Yval's lips were pressed into a thin line for a moment before the corners of his mouth curled upwards slightly. He shook the young woman's hand, "Y-you're right. I knew you'd be the only one who could help me. Same time next week then?"

"Of course. Just keep telling yourself that death is as much a part of life as birth." Alessa nodded as she escorted him out of her office. She turned to the receptionist, "Send in the next patient."
